Log Stool

Ash and Western Red Cedar logs.

Selected from the fire wood pile on the Highgrove Estate, this project comments on the history of the log and its long standing use as a seat. The tops of both chairs are carved in relief from the logs’ growth rings - their contours are reinterpreted to create a clear seat, this contemporary detail creates conversation with the naturally kept logs.

This idea has now developed into something of more a public seating concept, where I intend to locate stumps of trees on London streets (which will have been recently felled) and then to carve out this seat shape to give these lone stumps a new purpose - as a public seat. A map will be created so that the 'Stump Stools' can be located around the city.
